Following the completion of Fast Start Training, volunteers are asked to
complete the courses in the basic leader training series specific to the
position for they are registered. Basic Leader Training is available for Cub
Scout Leaders, Boy Scout Leaders and Venturing Leaders. All volunteers should
complete "This Is Scouting" (replaces New Leader Essentials) and then the
specific training appropriate to their registered position in Scouting. The
Basic Leader Training program is seamless training program that helps leaders
easily graduate through the courses quickly and with little duplication.
This Is Scouting
"This Is
Scouting" is an introductory session that highlights the values, aims, history,
funding, and methods of Scouting. It replaces New Leader Essentials (effective
March 15, 2009), and addresses how these aims and methods are reached in an
age-appropriate style within Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and
Venturing. Available through the
BSA On-Line
Learning Center,
the material is presented during a 45-minute training session.
The
benefits of "This Is Scouting" include:
· Assistance
in implementing the full Scouting program with chartered organizations
· A
better understanding of the advantages of encouraging youth and adult volunteers
to move through the traditional program as their youth mature
· An
awareness of the different aspects of the Scouting program, which may result in
leaders taking advantage of those programs for a child in a different age group
Leader Specific Training
Specific
Leader Training programs are not available on-line or over the internet. These
training programs are offered within each District at convenient locations
hosted by dedicated volunteers who want to help make your Scouting experience
enjoyable. To find what specific leader training programs are available in your

Council Training Calendar
and your
District website.
Cub Scout Leader Specific Training
Tiger Cub den leaders, Cub Scout den leaders, Webelos den leaders, Cubmasters,
and
pack committee members
can complete this training in one day or two or three evenings. These trainings
will cover in detail your role in the Pack and what you will be working on with
the Scouts in your den. Additionally, the following brochures are designed to
provide an at-a-glance orientation for new Cub Scout leaders. All files are in
PDF:
Boy
Scout Leader Specific Training
Scoutmasters and Assistant
Scoutmasters,
this training is divided into four parts. The first three parts concentrate on
troop operation and can be completed in one full day or three evenings. The
fourth part is Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills. The leader is considered
trained upon completion of New Leader Essentials, Scoutmaster and Assistant
Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.
Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills
Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is required outdoor training for all
Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, and Varsity Scout Coaches.
The course is based on the outdoor skills found in The Boy Scout Handbook for
the ranks of Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class. The course is also ideal
for Venturing leaders because it focuses on skills that build confidence and
competence in leaders conducting outdoor camping experiences. The course is
typically a day and a half long, but a leader can move at an accelerated pace by
demonstrating mastery of one or more specific skills.
Troop Committee Challenge
For
troop committee members,
Leader Specific training includes the Troop Committee Challenge. By following
the Troop Committee Training Syllabus, participants can complete the challenge
in three hours, after which they are considered trained. This course is also
available through the
BSA On-Line
Learning Center.
Venturing Leader Specific Training
Developed for
Venturing Advisors, Assistant Advisors,
and
Crew Committee Members,
this training incorporates Venturing's current adult leader training. New Leader
Essentials and Venturing Leader Specific Training can be completed in one day,
after which the leader is considered trained. This training will detail such
things as advancement, youth leadership, and how to run an effective Crew.
Advanced Leader Training Courses Information
Leaders that desire a deeper understanding and involvement in the program, and
who are otherwise qualified, will find advanced training programs highly
rewarding. Completion of these advanced courses provides volunteers with the
leadership skills, tools, and motivation to provide a higher quality program for
the youth that we serve. These programs serve as the advanced training program
for Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity and Venturing.
A
prerequisite for advanced training is the successful completion of basic
training for the participant's current primary registered position in Scouting.
Wood
Badge
Wood
Badge is Scouting's premier training course, open to adult leaders in all
Scouting Programs (Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturing, including Sea Scouts).
As a result of attending Wood Badge, participants will be able to: (a) view
Scouting globally, as a family of interrelated, values-based programs that
provide age-appropriate activities for youth; (b) recognize the contemporary
leadership concepts utilized in corporate America and leading government
organizations that are relevant to our values-based movement; (c) apply the
skills they learn from their participation as a member of a successful working
team, and (d) revitalize their commitment by sharing in an overall inspirational
experience that helps provide Scouting with the leadership it needs to
accomplish its mission on an ongoing basis. Wood Badge is offered by the Council
every year, in the Fall.
Powder Horn
Powder
Horn is a superb training opportunity designed as an action-packed, hands-on
outdoor course, designed to expose Venturing and Boy Scout leaders to activities
and resources necessary to operate a successful Venturing Ranger Award or Troop
High Adventure program. Powder Horn (a) provides an introduction to the
resources necessary to successfully lead their Venturers and older Boy Scouts
through a program of high adventure; (b) familiarizes the Advisor with the
Ranger program so that he or she can help the Venturer to meet the requirements
of the Ranger Award; and (c) helps the Scoutmaster in the design and delivery of
a high quality high adventure program. This course is based on the Venturing
Ranger requirements, giving participants an exposure to outdoor/high adventure
activities. Powder Horn is offered every other year (even numbered years) by the
Council. |
