Imagine Update October 2016

It’s been almost two years since we first introduced the vision of Imagine to our Scouting Family.

As folks throughout the Council asked questions and provided input, the sense of apprehensive excitement was widespread. A lot has happened since then to execute on the plan! While some of this work has happened “behind the scenes”, it is important that everyone understands how our vision is progressing toward reality.

As it is well-known by now, the sale of Camp Twin Lakes and Maywood Wilderness camp properties happened quite quickly, and has accelerated the process of planning for the new Webelos camp at Bear Paw Scout Camp. Part of the provisions of our sale of Twin Lakes was to ensure that we’d have the ability to seamlessly transition the Webelos residence camping program when the new camp was ready.

We have made a conscious decision to take the time needed to do things and build things right the first time. Developing a part of Bear Paw Scout Camp to be home to our Webelos Summer Camp program is a priority.

As part of that effort, we have secured an agreement with the new owners of the Twin Lakes property to allow our use of the property through the upcoming 2017 summer camping season.

Webelos Summer Camp will be held at Camp Twin Lakes in 2017.

Plans for the new Webelos camp and the rest of the Imagine projects are progressing. Over the past several months, we’ve facilitated many “tours” of Explorer Point at Bear Paw Scout Camp, the future home of the new Webelos camp, so everyone can share in the excitement of what this prime piece of property has to offer. The logistics of navigating potential obstacles, surveys, studies and long term usage considerations have caused some minor delays. We are committed to ensure our future vision properly respects our historical past.

A strategic master planning process is moving forward. We are working with an engineering firm on proper permitting and topographical design in order to begin showing visible progress! Very soon an access road to the location of the Webelos Camp will be constructed.

Most impressively, the excitement from the fall of 2014 continues to carry through to the present! This is demonstrated through offers of support to the project from local contractors, companies, and individuals throughout the Council. If you know of additional people who are interested in providing support to the Imagine vision, please have them contact me at or Brent Bowman at the Center for Scouting at (920) 734-5705.

The Imagine vision is more than just a new Webelos camp, and there’s much more to accomplish on this journey! The future is exciting for the Bay-Lakes Council. Continue to watch the website for additional updates and progress – and thanks for your ongoing support for Scouting in Eastern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula!
