Maple Syrup Days & Nova Award Program

As winter melts into spring, the sugar bush comes alive at Bear Paw Scout Camp in Mountain, WI. This sweet Scouting program will offer hands on experience in the process of making maple syrup from bucket to bottle. This program is intended for Boy Scouts and Adult Leaders. They should be capable of participating in physical activities and 6 grade science based principles.

Sap runs occur when the daytime temperature is above freezing (32°F) and the previous night was below freezing. Full buckets will make everyone happy, but we cannot control the weather, we just hope it cooperates.

Be prepared for whatever weather may happen. If the snow is still around, participants are encouraged to bring snowshoes or cross country skis. A limited number of snowshoes are available to rent for $3.00 a pair from Camp. A fair amount of snow or mud may be on the ground, so dress appropriately (boots are a must) and bring a dry change of clothes and shoes for the ride home.

One Day Program: Saturday, April 4:

These one-day programs start with check-in and breakfast at 8:00 a.m. The cost of the weekend program is only $15.00 and includes all activities, commemorative patch, 8 oz. bottle of Bear Paw Maple Syrup customized with their name and noted participation, and a great Scouting experience!

New for this year, Maple Syrup Days will be featuring the BSA Nova Award as a part of the Maple Syrup program curriculum. This program will feature all of the Maple Syrup events you come to expect and enjoy but also we will apply a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) curriculum to the process that will give participating Scouts a chance to earn one of the four BSA Nova Awards. The program will begin on Friday evening with fun STEM activities. On Saturday morning, a pancake and pure Bear Paw Maple Syrup breakfast will be served. Lunch will be provided. The Maple Syrup Days staff members will be educating the participants on tree identification, tapping  techniques, sap collection, firewood  preparation, maple  syrup  making  history, evaporating, filtering and bottling, and of course, tasting. Participants will be making hydrometers and learning about sugar content in liquid. Everyone will practice tapping with a brace and bit and setting a spile. We will also get to go out into the woods to empty buckets, which have collected sap from the sugar maple trees. Saturday evening will feature more fun activities that apply to Maple Syrup and STEM.

Please arrive with a written roster of participant’s names, addresses, and phone numbers, as we are required to keep this on file.
