National Rifle Association - Range Safety Officer Training

Would you like to donate your valuable time to help more boys take advantage of the Shooting Sports Programs at Bay Lakes Council Camps?  All Bay-Lakes Council firearms shooting sports now require an NRA Range Safety Officer. This is in addition to the NRA Certified Instructor for Rifle, Shotgun, Black Powder or Pistol. The NRA Range Safety Officer program was developed in response to the demand for a nationally recognized range safety officer certification. NRA Range Safety Officers are people who possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to organizing, conducting, and supervising safe shooting activities and range operations. NRA Range Safety Officers should be experienced shooters, involved in many aspects of target shooting, training, and range supervision. The NRA encourages active shooters to learn more and become responsible for the safety of fellow shooters through this program.

Participants must be 21 or older!

There will be a training session at Bear Paw Scout Camp Friday and Saturday, May 1-2, 2015. This NRA Range Safety Officer class is open to all Scouters.  Class will be Friday night and Saturday until around 05:00 PM. Please be prepared to stay overnight in either Albright or Torinus Lodge at camp. Registration and building assignment begins at 05:00 PM Friday and class begins promptly at 07:00 PM.

This course teaches the basic duties a Range Safety Officer performs. It provides a thorough introduction to: range safety briefings; range inspections and rules; emergency procedures; and how to clear firearm stoppages and correct malfunctions. The skills acquired in this course require regular practice which should initially take place under the supervision of a qualified individual---such as an NRA Chief Range Safety Officer (CRSO).

The course fee is $60.00. In addition to the course fee there are registration fees paid to the National Rifle Association as follows:

Members: All first time Instructors and Range Safety Officers will pay a flat rate of $30 for a 2 year term. Additional ratings will be done for a onetime $10 fee and added to your file. All renewing Training Counselors, Instructors, Chief Range Safety Officers, and Range Safety Officers will pay a flat rate of $30 for a two year term, regardless of how many ratings are being renewed.

Non-members: All first time Instructors and Range Safety Officers will pay a flat rate of $50 for 2 years term. Additional ratings will be done for a onetime $20 fee and added to your file. All renewing Instructors, Chief Range Safety Officers, and Range Safety Officers will pay a flat rate of $50 for a two year term, regardless of how many ratings are being renewed.

If you are NOT a member, you will need to wait until you receive your NRA Instructor ID number to register. The discounted cost of NRA membership is $25.00 annually if obtained at the event.  It is $35.00 otherwise.
