OKPIK: Cold weather camping skills training.

Bay-Lakes Council will be conducting Okpik – a cold weather camping skills training program.  Okpik is intended to train Boy Scouts, Venturers, and adult leaders in proper winter camping techniques so they can take these skills back to their Units and extend their camping season to a 12 month program.

The program will be conducted in two parts:

The first is an indoor training session on Saturday, January 13, 2018, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Christ the King Church in Combined Locks (601 S. Washington St. Combined Locks, 54113). The indoor program will include instruction on topics such as: proper clothing, First Aid, sleeping gear, shelter building, cold weather menu planning, hypothermia, equipment and packing, winter games and outdoor activities. Attendance at the indoor session is required before attending the outdoor experience.

The second is an outdoor training session Friday, February 9 through Sunday, February 11, 2018 at Gardner Dam Scout Camp (N9240 Gardner Dam Rd. White Lake, WI 54491. The participants will put into practice what they have learned during the indoor program.

Participants must be at least 13 years old and youth must hold a leadership position in their Unit. The weekend training is not intended to be a Unit camping trip. Two deep leadership is required for each Unit sending youth to the training.

Fee for both sessions is $30 per person and includes printed material, camp reservations, and a specially designed patch. Participants are responsible for their own food and cooking at the outdoor session, and this will be coordinated at the indoor session.

Registration deadline is January 8, 2018.

Reservations are limited to the first 60 participants and are accepted on a first come first served basis.
